Unclaimed Money in the United Kingdom

The UK holds billions of pounds in unclaimed money across dormant bank accounts, forgotten pension pots, unclaimed Premium Bond prizes, and court funds. The most common cause is simply moving house — when you move and forget to update your address with your bank, building society, or pension provider, the account becomes dormant after a few years.

The Pensions Policy Institute estimates that over £31 billion sits in forgotten pension pots in the UK. Many people have multiple pension pots from different employers they've worked for over their careers and have simply lost track of them.

How to Claim Through MyLostAccount

Go to MyLostAccount.org.uk and enter your full name and any previous addresses. MyLostAccount submits your search to all member banks simultaneously. Each bank then searches their records and contacts you directly by post within 3 months if they find a match. There is no fee for this service.

What makes a UK bank account dormant? Under the Dormant Bank and Building Society Accounts Act 2008, an account is legally dormant after 15 years of no customer-initiated activity. After 15 years the balance may be transferred to Reclaim Fund Ltd and used for community purposes — but you can always reclaim your money at any time, free of charge. MyLostAccount also helps trace accounts dormant for less than 15 years, so search early.

How to Find a Lost UK Pension

Use the government's free Pension Tracing Service at gov.uk/find-pension-contact-details. You'll need the name of your former employer or the pension provider. The service finds the contact details of the pension scheme — you then contact them directly to verify your entitlement and claim.

How much unclaimed money is in the UK?
Estimates vary by category: £31.1B in forgotten pension pots (Pensions Policy Institute 2024), approximately £15 billion in dormant bank and building society accounts, and an unknown amount in unclaimed NS&I prize bond prizes and court funds.
What is MyLostAccount and how does it work?
MyLostAccount.org.uk is the official free tracing service run jointly by UK Finance, the Building Societies Association (BSA), and NS&I. You enter your name and former addresses, and it searches all 70+ member providers simultaneously. Responses arrive by post within 3 months.
Are there unclaimed Premium Bond prizes?
Yes — NS&I regularly has unclaimed prizes because they cannot contact the bondholder. You can check your Premium Bond numbers online at nsandi.com or use their app. If NS&I has lost your address, updating it could reveal unclaimed prizes.
Can I claim on behalf of a deceased relative?
Yes. Contact the bank or financial institution directly with a death certificate and grant of probate or letters of administration. For NS&I, there is a specific bereavement process on their website. Most institutions have dedicated bereavement teams.
