Norwegian banks are legally required to maintain dormant accounts and make reasonable efforts to contact account holders. How to Search Norwegian Banks

Norwegian Identification

Norwegian bank accounts are linked to the fødselsnummer (national identity number) — an 11-digit number assigned to all Norwegian citizens and long-term residents. Providing this number significantly speeds up any dormant account search.

For estates and deceased relatives, you will need a skifteattest (estate certificate) from the Norwegian probate court (Skifteretten), which proves your right to administer the estate. Banks will typically provide information to the estate administrator upon receipt of this document.
