Unclaimed Money in Taiwan
Taiwan holds billions of NTD in inactive bank accounts across its licensed banking system. Taiwan's FSC removed the formal statutory "dormant account" (靜止戶) classification in 2014, so individual banks now set their own inactivity thresholds — typically ranging from 1 to 5 years depending on the institution. Once an account is flagged as inactive, transaction functions may be restricted but funds remain claimable from the original bank.
The Taiwan Bankers Association (銀行公會 / TBA) operates a centralised dormant account search portal at dormant.banking.org.tw, covering member banks across Taiwan. The Financial Supervisory Commission (金融監督管理委員會 / FSC) oversees the financial system. After an extended period of inactivity, unclaimed balances may ultimately be remitted to the National Treasury, but claims against the original bank remain open — contact the branch directly.

ROC National ID and Overseas Access
The TBA dormant account portal requires your ROC National ID number (身分證字號 — a 10-character alphanumeric code). Overseas compatriots (僑胞) holding a Taiwanese Overseas Compatriot ID Certificate (台灣居留證 or 僑居身分) may also use their passport number on the portal.
The portal can be accessed from any country. If you are a former Taiwan resident without a current National ID, contact the bank directly with your passport and account documentation, or reach out to the Taiwan Bankers Association at ba.org.tw for guidance. For deceased relatives, estate claim procedures apply and should be handled through the original bank with a certified copy of the death certificate and proof of inheritance.
