Unclaimed Money in Sweden
Sweden holds significant unclaimed assets spread across its major banks and insurance companies. Unlike France or the UK, Sweden does not have a single central portal — instead, each bank manages its own dormant account process. Riksgälden (the Swedish National Debt Office) manages government debt and deposit insurance, but is not a custodian of dormant bank accounts. Swedish law (the Limitations Act / Preskriptionslag) means that claims prescribe after 10 years unless interrupted, so it is important to search while the accounts are still active.
Swedish banks are required under the Payment Services Act to make reasonable efforts to trace account holders. If you or a family member have ever lived, worked, or banked in Sweden, there is a straightforward process to check for dormant funds at each of the major banks.
How to Search for Dormant Accounts in Sweden
Swedbank
Sweden's largest retail bank. Contact Swedbank directly via their website or branch — request a search for dormant accounts in your name or a deceased relative's name.
Handelsbanken
Privately held major bank. Submit a written or in-person request. Handelsbanken has branches across Sweden and can trace accounts by personal number (personnummer).
SEB & Nordea
Both banks accept dormant account enquiries. Nordea has operated in Sweden for decades and may hold old accounts from Nordbanken, PK-banken, and Postbanken.
Swedish Insurance
Life insurance (livförsäkring) and pension accounts may be held by Folksam, Länsförsäkringar, or SPP. Contact insurers directly or use Söktjänst at insurancefinders.se.
Using Your Swedish Personal Number
The Swedish personnummer (personal identity number) is the key to tracing any account in Sweden. Every bank account, insurance policy, and investment is linked to the account holder's personnummer. When making a dormant account enquiry, always provide the full 10-digit personnummer of the account holder (or deceased relative) alongside full name and last known address.
For deceased relatives, a bestyrkt kopia (certified copy) of the dödsbevis (death certificate) and a bouppteckning (estate inventory) is typically required. Swedish banks generally respond within 30 days under the Payment Services Directive obligations.
