Unclaimed Money in Mexico

Mexico has one of the shortest dormancy periods in Latin America — just 3 years of inactivity before bank accounts are transferred to the Banco de México (Banxico). This means that Mexican accounts can move out of commercial banks surprisingly quickly. The good news is that a well-developed regulatory framework makes searching relatively straightforward.

CONDUSEF (Comisión Nacional para la Protección y Defensa de los Usuarios de Servicios Financieros) is Mexico's financial consumer protection agency and operates the main search portal for dormant bank accounts. For insurance, INFOASEGURA is the equivalent portal managed by CNSF.

Using CURP and RFC

Mexico uses two key identifiers: the CURP (Clave Única de Registro de Población — a unique population registry key) and the RFC (Registro Federal de Contribuyentes — tax ID). Both are linked to bank accounts. Having your CURP or RFC significantly speeds up any CONDUSEF search.

CURP can be retrieved for free at gob.mx/curp if you have lost it. RFC is issued by the SAT (Servicio de Administración Tributaria) and can be verified at sat.gob.mx. For deceased relatives, a certified copy of the acta de defunción (death certificate) from the Registro Civil is required to begin an estate claim.

How do I search CONDUSEF for dormant accounts?
Go to condusef.gob.mx and navigate to 'REUNE' (Registro de Cuentas y Contratos de Usuarios) or search via the BUZON service. Enter your CURP and follow the steps to identify any dormant accounts registered in your name.
What is the dormancy period for Mexican bank accounts?
Under Article 61 of the Mexican Credit Institutions Law (Ley de Instituciones de Crédito), accounts that have been dormant for 3 years are transferred to Banco de México. After 10 years total, funds are used for financial inclusion programmes and cannot be directly claimed.
What about AFORE pension accounts?
AFORE (Administradoras de Fondos para el Retiro) accounts are retirement savings accounts. Unclaimed AFORE funds are handled by CONSAR (Comisión Nacional del Sistema de Ahorro para el Retiro) at consar.gob.mx. These follow different rules to bank accounts.
Can non-Mexicans claim Mexican dormant accounts?
Yes. Non-residents can submit claims via CONDUSEF with a valid passport and documentation proving connection to the account. For estate claims involving non-Mexican heirs, apostilled foreign documents are required.
