Unclaimed Money in Denmark
Denmark requires banks to transfer dormant accounts to Statens Administration (the Danish government's financial administration body) after 20 years of inactivity. Before this transfer, the funds sit with the individual bank. Denmark has no centralized search portal, but Finanstilsynet (the Danish Financial Supervisory Authority) maintains oversight and banks are required to attempt contact before any transfer.
Denmark's Garantifonden for indskydere og investorer (the Guarantee Fund) also holds some unclaimed funds from bank failures. If you have ever lived, worked, or banked in Denmark, it is worth checking both the banks and Statens Administration.
How to Search for Dormant Accounts in Denmark
Danske Bank
Denmark's largest bank. Contact via danskebank.dk โ submit a dormant account enquiry with full name, date of birth, and CPR number if available.
Nordea Denmark
Part of the Nordic group. Traces legacy accounts from Unibank, Bikuben-GiroBank, and others. Can search historical Danish accounts.
Jyske Bank & Sydbank
Two large regional banks. Jyske Bank acquired BRFkredit; Sydbank has significant Jutland coverage. Worth checking if the account holder lived in Jutland or Funen.
Statens Administration
After 20 years, funds transfer here. Contact via statens-administration.dk to enquire about transferred dormant accounts in your name or a deceased relative's.
CPR Number and Documentation
The Danish CPR number (Det Centrale Personregister) is a 10-digit identification number assigned to all Danish citizens and residents. Providing the CPR number greatly accelerates any dormant account search as all accounts are linked to it.
For estates, a skifteattest (certificate of succession) from Skifteretten (probate court) is required. Foreign claimants should also provide a certified copy of their passport and proof of their connection to Denmark.
