Unclaimed Money in Finland
Finland has strong consumer financial protections but no central unclaimed money portal. Finnish banks are supervised by the Financial Supervisory Authority (Finanssivalvonta / FIN-FSA) and are required to maintain dormant accounts without any automatic transfer to the state. This means unclaimed funds can sit with Finnish banks for many years without expiry โ good news for claimants.
The Finnish Bankers' Association (Finanssiala) represents all Finnish banks and can assist with directing enquiries. Life insurance, savings insurance, and pension policies are also commonly unclaimed and held by Finnish insurers.
How to Search for Dormant Accounts in Finland
OP Financial Group
Finland's largest financial services group, covering OP Bank, Pohjola Insurance, and regional cooperative banks. Contact via op.fi or any local OP branch.
Nordea Finland
Part of the Nordic group. Can trace accounts going back to Merita and Postipankki. Contact via nordea.fi for dormant account enquiries.
Aktia & S-Bank
Aktia is a Helsinki-area bank; S-Bank is linked to the S-Group cooperative. Both accept written dormant account enquiries.
Finnish Insurance
Life insurance (henkivakuutus) and savings insurance may be held by OP Life, Mandatum Life, or LocalTapiola. Contact insurers directly for unclaimed policies.
Finnish Personal Identity Code
The Finnish henkilรถtunnus (HETU / personal identity code) is an 11-character identifier assigned to all Finnish citizens and long-term residents. Providing the HETU in any dormant account enquiry will significantly speed up the search, as all Finnish financial accounts are linked to it.
For deceased estates, a perukirja (estate inventory) prepared by a licensed estate administrator is the key document. Banks will provide information to the estate administrator and heirs named in the perukirja.
