Unclaimed Money in Poland
Poland has strengthened its unclaimed asset framework significantly since 2015. Under Polish law, bank accounts that have been dormant for 10 years are transferred to Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego (BGK) โ the state development bank โ where they remain available for claim. Life insurance proceeds that have been unclaimed for 5 years are also transferred.
The Polish Financial Supervision Authority (Komisja Nadzoru Finansowego / KNF) oversees the process. Poland's banking sector includes numerous banks from the communist era that were reorganised and privatised โ meaning some legacy accounts can be complex to trace.
