Genesis Global Capital completed its Chapter 11 restructuring and began distributing approximately $4 billion to creditors in August 2024. If you were a direct Genesis creditor and filed a timely proof of claim, your distribution has already been processed. Additional distributions remain possible from ongoing litigation against Digital Currency Group (DCG).
If you had funds in Gemini Earn, your claim was handled separately through Gemini, not the Genesis bankruptcy directly. Gemini settled with the NY AG for $1.1B and announced full recovery of Earn users' digital assets by May 2024. Log in to your Gemini account to check your distribution status.
What Happened to Genesis?
Genesis Global Capital was one of the largest crypto lending firms in the world, operating under the umbrella of Digital Currency Group (DCG), the same conglomerate that owns Grayscale. At its peak, Genesis had billions in outstanding loans to institutional clients and powered the yield products of multiple major exchanges.
The collapse came in waves. In June 2022, Three Arrows Capital (3AC) â a major Genesis borrower â imploded, leaving Genesis with hundreds of millions in uncollectible loans. Then in November 2022, FTX collapsed. Genesis had significant exposure to Alameda Research, FTX's trading arm, and froze customer withdrawals on November 16, 2022.
Despite months of negotiations with DCG and attempts to secure outside funding, Genesis could not resolve its liquidity crisis and filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on January 19, 2023 in the Southern District of New York.
The bankruptcy covered three main entities: Genesis Global Capital LLC (GGC), Genesis Asia Pacific Pte. Ltd. (GAP), and Genesis Global Holdco LLC. Combined, these entities had hundreds of thousands of creditors â primarily through intermediary platforms like Gemini Earn, but also through direct institutional lending relationships.

Genesis Recovery Rates by Asset
Recovery rates varied significantly depending on which cryptocurrency you held with Genesis. The plan paid creditors on an in-kind basis â meaning they received back a percentage of the actual coins they were owed, not a fixed dollar amount.
| Asset | In-Kind Recovery | USD Recovery (vs. Petition Date) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bitcoin (BTC) | ~51% | ~166% of petition-date value | BTC price much higher by distribution date |
| Ethereum (ETH) | ~66% | ~153% of petition-date value | ETH price recovery boosted USD returns |
| Solana (SOL) | ~30% | Varies | SOL had significant price recovery |
| USD Cash Claims | ~64% avg | ~64 cents on the dollar | Cash creditors received dollar settlement |
The in-kind distribution model was a significant benefit for crypto creditors: because Bitcoin and Ethereum prices rose substantially between the January 2023 petition date and the August 2024 distribution date, creditors who received coins in-kind effectively received far more than 100% of their claim value in current dollar terms.
While the headline numbers (51% BTC, 66% ETH) sound like significant losses, the court calculated claims based on January 2023 prices. By August 2024, BTC and ETH had recovered substantially â meaning creditors who received in-kind distributions often came out ahead in real dollar terms compared to their original holdings.
Are More Genesis Distributions Coming?
Potentially. As part of the confirmed bankruptcy plan, creditors established a $70 million litigation fund to pursue legal claims against Digital Currency Group (DCG), Genesis's parent company. The fund consists of $26 million in BTC, $13 million in ETH, and $31 million in USD.
DCG has been accused of playing a role in Genesis's financial difficulties, and the litigation fund exists to recover additional money for creditors. If these lawsuits succeed, distributions from the litigation proceeds would be made to the same creditors who participated in the original plan.
However, litigation is inherently unpredictable. There is no guarantee of success, no fixed timeline, and no specific dollar amount to count on. Creditors who believe they may be entitled to future distributions should ensure their contact information is current with the claims administrator.
If you already received your August 2024 distribution, no further action is required to remain eligible for any future litigation distributions â your claim is on record. If you believe you were a Genesis creditor and did not receive a distribution, contact the claims administrator to investigate your claim status.
Gemini Earn â Separate but Related
Many people who lost money in the Genesis collapse were not direct Genesis clients â they were retail users of Gemini Earn, a yield-bearing product that Gemini offered by lending customer funds to Genesis.
When Genesis froze withdrawals, approximately 340,000 Gemini Earn users lost access to roughly $900 million in crypto assets. Gemini's founders, Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, spent over a year negotiating a recovery with DCG before the New York Attorney General stepped in.
In January 2024, Gemini agreed to pay $1.1 billion to Earn users as part of a settlement with the NY AG â one of the largest crypto restitution settlements in history. Gemini announced full recovery of Earn users' digital assets by May 2024. Distributions were processed through Gemini's platform and were largely completed in 2024.

What to Do If You Had Genesis Exposure
-
Identify which platform you used
Were you a direct Genesis institutional client, a Gemini Earn user, or did you hold funds on another platform that used Genesis lending? Each has a different claims process. Direct Genesis clients went through the Chapter 11 bankruptcy; Gemini Earn users went through Gemini's separate settlement.
-
Check your email from 2023â2024
Both Genesis and Gemini sent extensive communications to affected users about the claims process and distribution timelines. Search your inbox for emails from @gemini.com or @genesiscap.co with subjects like "distribution," "recovery," or "claim."
-
Check your Gemini account (Earn users)
If you used Gemini Earn, log in to your Gemini account at gemini.com. Your transaction history should show any Earn distribution that was processed in 2024.
-
Check the bankruptcy docket (direct Genesis creditors)
If you were a direct creditor of Genesis Global Capital, the bankruptcy case is SDNY Case No. 23-10063. Distribution records are available on PACER. You can also contact the claims administrator Kroll at their Genesis-specific portal.
-
Stay updated on litigation developments
If additional funds are recovered through the DCG litigation, notifications will be sent to creditors of record. Ensure your contact details are current with the bankruptcy estate to receive any future distribution notices.
