What Happened to Bittrex?
Bittrex was one of the pioneering US cryptocurrency exchanges, founded in Seattle in 2014. For years it was a top-10 global exchange by volume. However, the company faced mounting regulatory pressure as the SEC intensified its scrutiny of crypto platforms.
In April 2023, the SEC sued Bittrex and its co-founder William Shihara, alleging that Bittrex operated as an unregistered national securities exchange, broker, and clearing agency. Unable to continue operating under this regulatory cloud, Bittrex announced the closure of its US platform and filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on May 8, 2023 in the US Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware.
The filing revealed liabilities of up to $1 billion and affected an estimated 1.6 million users. Separately, Bittrex Global β a company established in Bermuda to serve international (non-US) users β entered liquidation proceedings under Bermuda law.
The SEC settled its charges against Bittrex in August 2023 as part of the bankruptcy proceedings.

Bittrex US β Claim Status and What to Do
The deadline to file a proof of claim in the Bittrex US bankruptcy was August 31, 2023. This date has passed. Fewer than 36,000 of the estimated 1.6 million Bittrex US users filed claims β meaning over 98% of users did not participate. If you missed this deadline, your options are very limited.
If You Filed a US Claim Before August 31, 2023
The Bittrex Chapter 11 plan provided for 100% in-kind cryptocurrency distributions to creditors with allowed claims. This means you were entitled to receive back the full amount of crypto you held on the platform at the time of filing β in the same coins, not converted to USD.
To check your distribution status, visit the claims agent website at Omni Agent Solutions (case 23-10598) or check the Delaware bankruptcy docket on PACER. If you filed a claim and have not received a distribution, contact Omni Agent Solutions directly.
If You Did NOT File a Claim by August 31, 2023
Unfortunately, missing the bar date in a US bankruptcy typically means you forfeit your right to a distribution. In rare cases, courts allow late claims if a creditor can demonstrate "excusable neglect" or other extraordinary circumstances. This requires filing a formal motion with the bankruptcy court and is very rarely granted β but if you had a significant amount on Bittrex, it may be worth consulting a bankruptcy attorney.
Note that the extremely low claim rate (under 3% of users) suggests that many Bittrex users simply did not know about or understand the claims process. If you discover that you had unclaimed Bittrex funds, a legal consultation is recommended.
