Unlike airdrops with deadline windows, hard fork coins are permanently yours as long as you control the private keys to the original wallet. If you held BTC on August 1, 2017 and still have those keys, your BCH is waiting for you right now.
If you held coins on an exchange (Coinbase, Kraken, Binance, etc.) rather than a private wallet during a fork, the exchange received the forked coins on your behalf. Most major exchanges credited users — log in and check your exchange balance history. If the exchange no longer exists or never credited you, options are limited.
⛓️ What Is a Crypto Hard Fork?
A hard fork happens when a blockchain's community disagrees on the protocol rules and splits into two separate chains. Everyone holding coins on the original chain at the exact moment of the fork receives an equal balance of coins on both chains going forward.
Think of it like a company stock split — except instead of splitting one share into two shares of the same company, you end up with shares in two different companies. You keep your original coins, and you get a duplicate set of coins on the new chain for free.
The key requirement: you must have controlled the private keys to your wallet at the time of the fork. Coins on exchanges are a different matter (see the section below on exchange credits).
🪙 Major Hard Forks You May Have Unclaimed Coins On
Bitcoin Cash was created by miners who wanted larger block sizes. If you held 1 BTC before block 478,558 on August 1, 2017, you received 1 BCH — which is worth around $204 today. At its peak in December 2017, BCH was worth over $4,000.
How to Claim BCH from a Private Wallet
- Download Electron Cash (electron.cash) — the official BCH wallet
- Import your BTC wallet's seed phrase or private key into Electron Cash
- Your BCH balance will appear — send it to a secure address
- Move your BTC to a new wallet first to prevent replay attacks

Bitcoin Gold aimed to decentralize mining by switching from SHA-256 to the Equihash algorithm. BTG is worth considerably less than BCH today (~$0.43), but if you held large amounts of BTC, the value may still add up. At peak in 2017, BTG was worth over $500.
How to Claim BTG from a Private Wallet
- Download BTG Electrum from the official btgwallet.org
- Import your BTC seed phrase — BTG uses the same derivation path
- Critical: Move your BTC to a new wallet before importing the seed anywhere
- Send BTG to an exchange (Bitfinex, OKX, or others) to convert to BTC/USDT

Bitcoin SV ("Satoshi Vision") forked from Bitcoin Cash in November 2018 during the "hash war." If you held BCH before block 556,767, you received an equal amount of BSV. Note: many exchanges delisted BSV in 2023, so check carefully where you can convert it.
How to Claim BSV from a Private Wallet
- Use HandCash or the official Bitcoin SV wallet (simply.cash)
- Import your BCH wallet's private key or seed phrase
- Move your BCH to a new address first to avoid replay attacks between the BCH and BSV chains
- Check exchanges like OKX, Huobi/HTX, or Bitget for trading BSV

Ethereum Classic is the original Ethereum chain that continued after the community voted to reverse the DAO hack. Those who disagreed with the reversal kept the original chain as ETC. If you held ETH before block 1,920,000 on July 20, 2016, you still have an equal ETC balance on the original chain.
How to Claim ETC from a Private Wallet
- Add the Ethereum Classic network to MetaMask (Chain ID: 61, RPC: https://etc.rivet.link)
- Import your old ETH private key or seed phrase into MetaMask on the ETC network
- Your ETC balance will appear — transfer to an exchange like Coinbase or Kraken to convert
- Alternatively, use MyCrypto or MyEtherWallet with the ETC network selected

📋 How to Claim Fork Coins Safely — Step by Step
Follow these steps in order. The most common mistake is importing your seed phrase before moving your original coins, which exposes them to theft.
-
Move your original coins to a brand new wallet first
Create a fresh wallet and send all your original BTC (or ETH/BCH) to it. This separates your valuable coins from the claiming process. If something goes wrong during claiming, your original coins are already safe. Do this before anything else.
-
Download the official wallet for the fork chain
Use only official wallet software: Electron Cash for BCH, BTG Electrum for BTG, Simply Cash for BSV, or MetaMask with the ETC network for ETC. Download from the official project website — search for it yourself, don't click links in emails or forums.
-
Import your old private key or seed phrase into the fork wallet
The fork wallet uses the same keys as your original wallet, but reads the fork chain's ledger. Your fork coin balance will appear automatically once the wallet syncs. Most fork wallets sync within a few minutes.
-
Send fork coins to a new receiving address on the fork chain
Once your balance shows, send the forked coins to a fresh address on the fork chain — ideally on an exchange where you can sell them. Don't leave forked coins in the same wallet you imported your old keys into.
-
Sell or hold on a reputable exchange
Transfer forked coins to a major exchange (Coinbase, Kraken, Binance, or OKX depending on availability) and convert to BTC, ETH, or USD. Check current trading pairs before sending — not all exchanges list all fork coins.
🏦 Did Your Exchange Credit Your Fork Coins?
If your coins were on an exchange at fork time, the exchange received the fork coins on your behalf. Most major exchanges credited users — but some didn't, and some required users to request the coins manually within a limited window.

Exchange policies vary and some credited coins may have been converted or removed from dormant accounts. Log in to your old exchange accounts and check your transaction history and current balances. Contact exchange support if you believe you're owed fork coins from 2017–2018.
🛡️ Safety Rules When Claiming Hard Fork Coins
Move original coins first — always
Send your BTC/ETH to a brand new wallet before touching any fork claiming tool. This is the single most important safety step.
Never enter your seed into websites
Legitimate fork wallet software is a downloadable app — not a website that asks for your seed phrase. Websites claiming to give you fork coins for your seed phrase are scams.
Download wallets from official sources only
Search for the official project website directly. Fake fork wallets designed to steal keys are common. Verify download links against the project's official GitHub or Twitter/X.
Understand replay attack risk
Some fork pairs share transaction formats, meaning a transaction on one chain can be replayed on the other. Moving original coins to a new wallet before claiming eliminates this risk.
Use hardware wallets where possible
Ledger and Trezor natively support BCH, BTG, and ETC. You can claim without ever exposing your seed phrase to any software — the safest approach for large balances.
Ignore DMs offering to "help" you claim
No one in Telegram, Discord, or Twitter/X needs access to your keys to help you claim fork coins. Anyone offering this is a scammer without exception.
